Summer holidays: tips for perfect locks and cylinders
With the summer holidays just around the corner, the issue of home security is back in the spotlight. This is precisely the time when we need to make sure everything is in order before we go away, so we don’t find any unpleasant surprises when we return.
One very important factor that is often overlooked is the care and maintenance of locks and cylinders, to ensure they remain in perfect working order even after weeks of disuse.
In this article, our technicians will give you some tips on how to keep your door working perfectly and secure at all times.
1. Lubricate the components of cylinders and locks regularly
Are you finding it increasingly difficult to turn the key inside the lock cylinder? This happens because daily use of the cylinder gradually reduces the oil used to lubricate the pins and internal mechanisms, and over time, this increases friction and wear on the components.
This can also happen with double-bitted locks. Although these do not have a cylinder but rather metal plates known as gorges, over time these mechanisms can also become increasingly difficult to operate if not properly maintained.
Remember to lubricate cylinders and locks regularly with a mineral oil for mechanical cylinders at least once a year, to avoid being locked out of your home when you return from holiday.
2. Check the condition of your keys
Over time and with constant use, even the most durable keys can wear out and risk becoming unusable.
Before setting off on holiday, check the condition of the whole family’s keys and consider replacing them with new duplicates. It is also a good idea to leave a spare key with someone you trust completely, so that they can gain access to your home in an emergency whilst you are away.
3. Replace an old lock or cylinder with a new model
Another important tip is to check the condition of your current lock and cylinder. If very old products are fitted to your door, not only might you experience problems with the internal mechanisms despite regular maintenance, but your home will also be more vulnerable to break-in attempts.
In this case, we recommend replacing them with newer models that are less vulnerable to common break-in techniques, such as Mottura locks for armoured doors, featuring an anti-extraction trap for the cylinder, and Mottura CHAMPIONS Europrofile cylinders, with anti-picking technology, controlled break-off and additional protection systems.
4. Install a Defender to enhance your door’s security
To protect your door against break-in attempts by burglars, an excellent solution is to install a Defender® to safeguard the lock cylinder and the lock itself.
A Defender is Mottura’s iconic armoured protection device that shields your cylinder from attempts at drilling, picking (skilful lock-picking using a lock pick), bumping, extraction and breaking of the cylinder. In its magnetic version, it also provides effective protection against acid attacks.
