An armoured door is the best security barrier for your home and family against potential burglars.

In order to be truly effective, however, it also needs high security protection for the cylinder and lock, so as to defend them against tampering attempts: a Defender®.

Let's find out together what this is and how to choose the right one for your door.

What is a Defender®

The word defender was invented by Mottura and denotes an armoured protector that defends the cylinder and lock against attempts to pick, drill, bumping, break and extract the cylinder.

It is mainly used on Europrofile cylinder locks, but can also be installed on double bitted locks or patented core locks (such as Mottura 3DKey lock).

It consists of a cylindrical steel core body inserted into a special escutcheon. It covers the cylinder on the outside of the door and is fixed directly to the lock by means of internal through-bolts. Depending on the security level of the Defender, the body may also feature anti-drill steel balls and a manganese plate for additional protection.

The key-entry hole is partially covered, protected by a rotating pad that reduces it to a thin slit, to prevent tampering attempts as much as possible.

Why a Defender makes your armoured door more secure

The design of most modern Defenders is designed to minimise the possibility of attack

The screw mounting on the lock and not on the door, and the truncated cone shape of most Defenders make it extremely difficult to detach by striking it from the side or pulling it out.

The additional steel balls, as well as the manganese plate, add further protection against drilling and bumping.

However, it is important to choose a high security Defender® tested to the strictest international safety standards. Some cheap armoured protectors are made from poor materials and do not provide the right level of defence for your armoured door.

Mottura's DF series Defender® all have a solid steel body and are tested according to the European standard EN 1906:2012, passing tests with the highest classification.

Want an extra degree of protection? Buy a Magnetic Defender

If you want to raise the protection level of your armoured door lock even higher, choose a magnetic Defender.

This is a Defender that uses the same materials and protection mechanisms as a traditional mechanical model, to which a steel plate is added that completely covers the key entry hole and can only be turned using a special magnetic key (in the case of Mottura Magnetic Defenders®, this key is protected against unauthorised duplication).

It is therefore even more effective in protecting against burglary techniques and also against acid attacks.
