Bumping: what it is and how to protect your home
What is the bumping technique?
Bumping (or key bumping) is one of the most common methods of breaking into Europrofile cylinders with a traditional operating mechanism (using pins and springs).
Originally developed as a technique for locksmiths, over the years it has become increasingly common amongst burglars as well.
How does key bumping work?
To using this technique to attempt an attack against the cylinder, two tools are required:
- a blank key that has been filed to the maximum depth (also known as a bump key);
- a striking tool (such as a hammer).
The bump key is inserted into the cylinder and tapped with the hammer, causing the pins to jolt slightly until they are aligned, thereby allowing the cylinder rotor to move and the door to open.
How can you protect your home against bumping?
- Buy an anti-bumping Europrofile cylinder, fitted with special shaped pins that block the action of the bump key (such as Mottura Champions® cylinders).
- Install a magnetic Defender® to protect your cylinder. This device completely shields the keyway using a special steel plate that can only be unlocked with a specific magnetic key.

Europrofile Champions® Cylinders
The range of Champions® security cylinders includes different cylinder models, each of which is characterized by particular technical qualities, different types of allowed key duplication and the numerous new applicable functions.
Each set of keys, sealed at the origin, is accompanied by the personal ownership card to be showed while requesting key duplicates.

The magnetic Defender® is the best form of protection against acid attacks, as well as against break-in attempts such as the use of a drill, pick, percussion blows and extraction of the cylinder rotor.
